I set up First Take Workshops back in 2017, at a time when I was stepping back into acting myself. It didn’t take me long to realise there was a real need for a dedicated, supportive creative space for actors right here in York.
 

Back in the 90s, one of my favourite places in the world was the Actors Centre in Newcastle. It gave me brilliant training from working industry professionals, but more than that, it was a community where I made friends for life. When it closed its doors twenty years ago, I knew I wanted to build something similar for our part of the world.
 

First Take began small: just ten of us pooling our time, energy and resources to bring top Casting Directors and Directors to York, so we could all learn together.
 

Today, that same spirit lives on. We’ve grown, but we’re still that welcoming, inclusive space for every actor,  whether you’re stepping in front of a camera for the very first time, or you have years of experience behind you. This is somewhere you can take bold creative risks, sharpen your skills, and finally leave imposter syndrome at the door.
